Star Wars Trilogy Limited Edition Collector's Set, Widescreen, VHS, 20th Century-Fox Home Ent, Japan 1997

This is the Japanese equivalent to the US Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition box set released in 1997. This is a lavish, limited edition set (only 10.000 were made for Japan, while 40.000 were released in the US.) The box is a heavy cardboard box, covered in black faux-leather vinyl.

Inside you'll find all three films in Widescreen format in Hi-Fi Stereo, as well as a separate tape featuring "The Making of Star Wars Special Edition" documentary.

My Japanese set came with the original shipping box, which has a label listing the contents of the box set. The vinyl box still has the cellophane on it, but it is opened at the end so I can slip the contents out. As much as possible I try to keep wrappings intact on my sets, so while the cellophane is distracting in the photos, I leave it on.

The accompanying artbook is a soft cover 56-page book with lavish illustrations and sketches from the Special Editions. The text in the book remains in English, something that is even noted on the label on the shipping box.
You also get a heavy pewter plaque with an edition number on the back (This is no. 1963 of 10.000), a set of 35mm film cells from one of the Special Editon scenes (both my US set and this Japanese set features the Jabba scene), as well as a set of prints of Drew Struzan's Special Edition poster art. Finally, there is a mail-in offer coupon for some Star Wars merchandise.
