Star Wars Holiday Special, VCD-R, Bootleg, USA 1999

This is a burned VideoCD bootleg of the Star Wars Holiday Special, bought on eBay way back in 1999. Yes, I know. There are hundreds of different bootlegs of this programme to be found on eBay every day. I've included this here because it was my first ever copy of this special. I went into my first viewing fully prepared. I had no illusions about this being any good, and it wasn't, but the Star Wars Holiday Special has a rightful place in any Star Wars collection.
I'd read about the Holiday Special in the letters pages of a Star Wars comic back in 1984, but never could track down a copy before the internet changed the world. In the time before the Internet, VHS multi-generational dubs were all you could hope to find, but slowly the VideoCD and DVD bootlegs started to appear on eBay around 2000. For the most part these were superior to the VHSes doing the rounds, often coming from a source closer to the actual taping. For someone living in Europe these were most welcome, as importing and playing back US VHS tapes was more or less impossible. This particular version omits all the commercial breaks, so it's hard to pin down which broadcast this was sourced from. The quality indicates this being several generations removed from the original taping. The first scenes are especially rough, but they may be spiced in from a different recording. My copy has developed read-errors, some 26 years after it was purchased. Good thing I made a back-up on my computer. |
