Star Wars Episode II, VCD, CeQuadrat "CVD" Bootleg, Thailand 2002
|
This is an early bootleg containing a "CAM"-version of Star Wars Episode I. "Cam" means it was camcorded by someone in an actual theatre, so the image is a bit skewed and the sound has a natural reverb from a large auditorium. I generally prefer this kind of bootleg, as they represent a "historical document" of the actual theatrical release. The files on the disc are dated May 2002, so this was mastered very close to the film's theatrical premiere.
The film is generally "letterboxed" preserving most of the widescreen framing from the theatre. The audio is original English, with electronically generated Thai subtitles. (The Thai subtitles are left off where there are on-screen subtitles for the alien languages.) The audio is missing from the first 90 seconds of the film, coinciding exactly with the end of the opening crawl. It's as if they removed the Star Wars theme to avoid a copyright strike. By necessity, the film comes split over two discs, as the VideoCD format can only fit approx. 67 minutes to a disc. Each side starts with a short logo for a company called "CeQuadrat", which I suspect is not a legitimate distributor. The packaging or discs do not feature their branding, but attribute this bootleg to legitimate Thai distributor CVD, naughty! The same outfit is responsible for a different Episode II bootleg, which was sourced from the official DVD release with files dated September 2002. |
