The Empie falls... Oh dear!
Along with the 1995 worldwide re-releases of the original Star Wars trilogy on home video, the films were released on Laserdisc in Hong Kong. The 1995 sets used the 1993 THX remastered versions of the films. Whereas letterboxed widescreen was the norm for Laserdisc releases at the time, these releases featured cropped fullscreen versions of the films. Audio was in the original English, accompanied by burnt-in Chinese subtitles. Before the film starts, you get an X-files trailer and part 3 of the 1995 Leonard Maltin interview with George Lucas. I suspect due to some copyright shenanigans, the usual Fox fanfare at the start of the films is replaced by a CBS/Fox Video intro on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The final shot before the end credits is letterboxed, to segue into the "iris in" transition to the letterboxed text. The film was spread across three sides in the CLV format. Side four contains just the usual message: "Program material is recorded only on the other side of this Laservision disc." Extraordinarily hard to find, it took me a few years (and Dineros) to collect a complete set of these Hong Kong Laserdiscs, but the eBay Gods provided in the end. I was lucky to find this one in near pristine condition! These discs were the source of many of the early VideoCD and DVD bootlegs of the trilogy, originating from China in the early 2000's.
