The Empire Strikes Back Special Edition, DVD, 20th Century-Fox Home Ent. UK 2006
Though they were advertised as a major selling point, the original versions were relegated to the bonus discs, separate from the main programme. They were also sourced from the 1993 scans used for the THX Laserdisc releases, which meant they were in non-anamorphic widescreen, which is vastly inferior to a "proper" DVD transfer.
This 2-disc DVD set of The Empire Strikes Back could be bought separately or as part of the 2006 UK box set.
The covers and discs in the box set are identical to the versions sold separately. Usually, multipack releases omit the barcode from the back of the covers, to prevent stores from splitting up the sets and selling the discs separately, but here there is no difference between the boxed and the separate releases.
These 2006 re-releases of the original Star Wars trilogy movies are notable for the inclusion of the "unaltered" theatrical versions of the films. Known colloquially as the "GOUT"-versions (an acronym for George's Original Unaltered Trilogy), the original versions went on a moratorium with the release of the Special Editions in 1997, and weren't available for the interim 9 years.
