Star Wars Holiday Special (WMAR-TV2), DVD-R, Bootleg, USA 2002
The DVD-R disc comes with a functional menu and scene selection options. Audio is encoded as Dolby Digital 2-channel, but obviously in mono. There are 5 subtitle tracks on the disc, but all are empty. The version I have here is from a taping from WMAR-TV2, Baltimore, and seems to be from an early generation copy. There is a CBS Newsbreak, and most of the commercial breaks are intact, which add to the fun. On my copy there is a 20th. Century Fox logo added to the end, but I don't believe that was part of the original broadcast.
The Star Wars Holiday Special has a rightful place in any Star Wars collection. In the time before the Internet, VHS multi-generational dubs were all you could hope to find, but slowly the VideoCD and DVD bootlegs started to appear on eBay around 2000. For the most part these were superior to the VHSes doing the rounds, often coming from a source closer to the actual taping. For someone living in Europe these were most welcome, as importing and playing back US VHS tapes was more or less impossible.
